A charging problem on a new #Samsung #GalaxyS6 is not unheard of but it looks like more and more readers are contacting us about them. With only a few months after the first Galaxy S6 series hits the market, this does not seem comforting for the Android community at all. We expect a lot from Samsung with their flagship phones and this is absolutely not one of them. Anyway, as we wait for more updates from Samsung (if this is a manufacturing defect), we hope that the advice we have for you below may be effective.
These are the topics discussed in this post:
- Galaxy S6 boot problem due to Google apps
- Galaxy S6 does not charge to 100% anymore
- MicroUSB port on Galaxy S6 gets very hot when charging

PROBLEM #1: GALAXY S6 BOOT PROBLEM DUE TO GOOGLE APPS
Hi. I just recently (two days ago) switched to the Galaxy S6 from an iPhone. I got a notification from “system manager” saying I needed to update my phone yesterday, after only having the phone one full day. I thought this was kind of fishy but I finally allowed it to update – and then all hell broke loose! The phone kept turning on and off, finally staying off to the point that the power button wouldn’t turn it on. I started trying crazy combinations of buttons to try and get it to turn on (sorry, brand new to droid software, thought my brand new phone had just died) and finally got it to start up.
THEN it started going into a sequence which I think is the constant reboot problem others have mentioned & that you describe on your site. No matter what I couldn’t get the phone to stay on. The most promising thing that happened was that I got a battery/charging icon on a black screen when plugged in to charge. I finally left the thing alone for a few hours (went to sleep) and when I got up the phone was working completely fine.
Following that, I discovered that any time I try to use Google Play Store or ANY Google Apps on the phone it seems to trigger this weird on/off/stay off/reboot cycle.
Being so new to this operating software I literally have no idea what to do but do not want to do a factory reset until I learn how to back up my phone to my Google account (could I please get some help with that too?).
**Update – it is DEFINITELY everything associated with the Google apps causing the phone to freak out. Thanks!
Sincerely…frustrated new droid user. — Lauren
Solution: Hi Lauren. That’s strange that first party apps from Google (which is the maker of the Android operating system) have problems running on a new phone.
If the issues you mentioned started occurring after an update, try doing a factory reset to restore the phone’s firmware back to its stock settings. After that, try holding off any new updates (especially for Google apps) so you can observe how the phone behaves for several days.
If you haven’t tried doing a factory reset on an Android device before, just follow these steps:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
- Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
- When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
- Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, wipe data/factory reset and press the Power key to select it.
- Press the Volume Down button again until the option Yes — delete all user data is highlighted and then press thePower key to select it.
- After the reset is complete, highlight Reboot system nowand hit the Power key to restart the phone.
PROBLEM #2: GALAXY S6 DOES NOT CHARGE TO 100% ANYMORE
My phone basically does not full charge anymore. I have tried to calibrate battery more than a couple of times. Tried to charge with fast charge, normal charge and even wireless charge. None of them charged 100%.
It first shows me it charged 100% and once I disconnect from cable, it drops to 97% charged. If I reconnect the power cable, it drops to 96% and it start charging again. When it hits to 100%, it drops to 97% again if I disconnect the power cable. This does never hit 100% if I disconnect the power cable. — Jae
Solution: Hi Jae. Charging process is governed by the phone’s firmware so if it appears that your S6 is no longer charging up to 100%, you must look into a few factors.
The first thing that you can do is to ensure that the phone’s system cache is clean. You have to wipe the cache partition to do that. Here’s how:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and theHome key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
The next thing to do is to try charging the phone when it’s on ultra power saving mode. By transforming your phone into a dumb phone temporarily, you may be able to charge the battery up to 100%. To do that, just follow these steps:
- From the Home screen, tap theApps Drawer.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Select Ultra power saving mode.
- Turn on Ultra power saving mode.
Finally, perform a factory reset (steps provided above).
PROBLEM #3: MICROUSB PORT ON GALAXY S6 GETS VERY HOT WHEN CHARGING
my phone doesn’t charge. i am using the charger and sub wire it came with the phone (fast charging). while trying to plug in the micro usb wire only once out of 3 trials it actually start charging, and all the trails it shows (fast charging) and the icon show its on charge but most of times i leave it check in morning it’s still on same percentage. and if i got lucky and it actually works and start charging fast, the white piece ( micro usb port ) get very hot , extremely hot and burns my finger right away all the time while its charging fast…any solution?! — Osa
Solution: Hi Osa. The charging port should not get overly hot so the problem may actually be coming there. It’s hard to determine for certain though if there’s a hardware problem involved unless you have someone open the phone up and check the component in question. If your S6 is still covered by a repair or replacement warranty, we recommend that you use that to secure a fix (or get a new phone).
A bad USB port is one of the common hardware failures for smartphones so there’s a chance that the one on your device no longer charges.
PROBLEM #4: GALAXY S6 STARTS CHARGING AGAIN AFTER BOOTING IN SAFE MODE
Hi Android guys!
I have a Samsung Edge S6 for several months now. I have looked after it well so it should be working ok.
Last week, it basically was dead after I charged it during the night. Power button didn’t work. The shop where I bought it did a reboot and said it had to be charged even though I had charged it already.
I recharged and all was ok until this morning. Same thing happened again. This time I couldn’t get it to reboot. I checked your website and tried the safe mode Power and Volume down key. This worked.
I’m quite pissed off. This was an expensive phone. As Edge S6 is doing this a lot now, should I just send it back and get a new one on the guarantee? Have you other users who have the same problem repeating?
Do you know how it can be avoided? I have never had this problem with other android phones before. Cheers. — Nollaig
Solution: Hi Nollaia. An issue like this can be caused by all sorts of things although the most common reasons involve third party apps, bad firmware, faulty hardware, or a combination of them.
If your phone boots fine in safe mode, that may mean that you have installed a problem app.
Try doing a factory reset and do not install anything for a day. Keep the phone clean (by not installing anything) and try to use it as often as you can. If the problem won’t recur, that’s an indication that one of your apps is indeed messing up with the system.
As only you know what apps you have, we recommend that you be careful with what to install next time. Stick to official or mainstream apps. Apps can do a lot of things including the chance of compromising your data, opening a backdoor to allow more malicious apps to install without your knowledge, hindering some of phone functions, to mention just a few.
When installing apps, it’s good to be paranoid. A suspicious mentality when it comes to using smartphone is recommended. Theirs is no better antivirus than prevention.
Apps from unknown or least known developers must always be held in suspect. Make sure to check how popular an app before installing it by looking at its user install counter in the Play Store. If you can see that the app you want has only a meager number of installs and receives bad reviews from users, that’s never a good point to start. Unpopular apps tend to be outdated and may contain viruses (not all though) so installing them may result to problems later on.
Apps are not created equal and the more experienced the developing team is, the lesser the chance of bugs it may create. This is the main reason why we want you to stick to mainstream apps as the developer is probably excellent and may be motivated to keep their products well maintained to cause as little problems as possible.
