Samsung Galaxy S5 Won’t Turn On or Boot Up After Lollipop Update [Troubleshooting Guide]

Samsung Galaxy S5 Won’t Turn On or Boot Up After Lollipop Update [Troubleshooting Guide]

Hi Smart Andro World, my Galaxy S5 won’t turn on after I installed the lollipop update. Please help!
That is just one of the many emails we received from our readers shortly after Android 5 Lollipop
update was rolled for the Samsung Galaxy S5.
Before anything else, I just want to make a distinction between the phrases “won’t turn on” and “won’t boot up.” When you say “won’t turn on,” it means the phone won’t respond when you press the power key; the screen won’t light up, there are no vibrations nor sounds.
On the other hand, when you say “won’t boot up,” it means that the phone powers on but couldn’t reach the Home screen. More often, the screen stays black but the back lights are clearly lit, audio may be played during boot up, or the screen is stuck at the Samsung logo.
Apparently, these issues are firmware-related considering they occur just after the update. So, let’s set our focus on the firmware while troubleshooting the phone. Hardware problem is out of the question in this case.
  1. Galaxy S5 shut down and won’t turn back on
  2. Galaxy S5 power key won’t respond but vibrates
  3. Galaxy S5 stuck on Samsung logo after the update
  4. Galaxy S5 cannot boot up completely
IMPORTANT NOTEThe primary purpose of troubleshooting is to find or know what the problem really it or what caused it. If you the issue or the cause, that’s the time you can formulate a procedure on how to fix it. However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to fix every problem especially ones that are hardware-related.

GALAXY S5 SHUT DOWN AND WON’T TURN BACK ON

ProblemGood day droid guy! Today, I received a notification about the Android lollipop update for my phone. By the way, it’s a Samsung Galaxy S5 about 7 months old. I downloaded the update and I think everything was successful. In fact, I was able to use my phone for a few hours before it shut itself down. When I tried to turn it back on, it won’t. I know it isn’t the battery because after the update I fully charged it. By the time it shut down, the battery must be around 90% or even more. But then I tried to plug the charger in and the LED indicator turned red, meaning, it was charging. After a few minutes, it turned green, a sign that the battery is fully charged. The problem is, the phone just won’t turn on. How can I make it to come back on? — Melissa
Troubleshooting: Good day to you, too, Melissa! You know, glitches happen all the time especially after a major firmware upgrade. You mentioned the phone charges fine, so with that, we know the hardware is working just fine without any issues. Now, about your problem, I believe it’s just a glitch in the firmware. I encountered issues like this before and more often than not, soft reset would fix them. So, that’s the only thing I want you to try. After all, you said you were able to use your phone for a few hours before it powered down.
  1. While the phone is on, open the back cover and pull the battery out.
  2. Without its battery, press and hold the Power key for a minute.
  3. Now place the battery back in and the back cover.
  4. Try to charge the phone.

GALAXY S5 POWER KEY WON’T RESPOND BUT VIBRATES

ProblemHi team. Can you help me with my phone please? About three days ago, I updated my phone to lollipop. I downloaded it and it installed itself to my phone successfully. However, a couple of days after the update, I found my phone turned on. I left it with 87% battery in the night so I expected that it would last up to the morning considering I won’t use it for the entire night that I’m sleeping. When I woke up I found it turned off. So, I tried to power it on but it just wouldn’t respond when I press the power button. I also tried the Power, Home and Volume Up buttons to boot up but still the device won’t respond. I really don’t know what happened to it so I can’t provide more information. But if you know how to fix this problem, please guide me so I can use my phone again.
I almost forgot, the phone vibrates every few seconds. I’m really confused why it’s doing this. Please help! — Casey
Related ProblemDroid guy. My Galaxy S5 won’t continue booting up after the lollipop update. It just displays the Samsung logo for a few seconds, then the screen turns off, the phone vibrates and the Samsung logo shows on the screen for a few seconds again. — Lorraine
Troubleshooting: Hello Casey! Based on your description, I believe the problem is with the power key of your phone. It is stuck! That explains why it won’t respond when you press the power key and why it just vibrates instead of turning on. It’s not really about the firmware that you downloaded and installed. The best thing you can actually do, is press the power key repeatedly. If it was just stuck and not damaged, the procedure can actually fix the problem. Otherwise, you need to have the phone checked by a technician.

GALAXY S5 STUCK ON SAMSUNG LOGO AFTER THE UPDATE

ProblemThe phone just finished updating itself to lollipop then it rebooted but got stuck during boot up. All I can see on the screen of my Galaxy S5, and it’s been like this for a couple of hours now, is the Samsung logo. I tried a hundred times already to reboot it but it gets stuck on that same screen every time. My friend said to remove the battery and let the phone sit without it for a minute but it’s still the same. I didn’t want an update but Samsung pushed it and my phone downloaded it automatically. If I’d known it would be like this, I never would have downloaded it. But since it happened, can you help me fix it, please? — Sarah
Troubleshooting: Hello Sarah! There were reports from users who experienced this problem that said it could be a firmware glitch. Taking that into consideration, it’s safe to begin your troubleshooting with soft reset.
  1. While the phone is on, open the back cover and pull the battery out.
  2. Without its battery, press and hold the Power key for a minute.
  3. Now place the battery back in and the back cover.
  4. Try to charge the phone.
It’s basically like what your friend told you to do but with a little variation–pressing and holding the power key for a minute. If that doesn’t work, then let’s proceed to wiping the cache partition. It works almost every time and the difference between this procedure and master reset is that your data will not be deleted. Here’s how you do it:
  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

GALAXY S5 CANNOT BOOT UP COMPLETELY

ProblemMy Galaxy S5 started acting weird after the lollipop update. At first, the screen just stayed black and then it got stuck after the logo but still black. I already tried wiping the cache partition but it didn’t do anything so what should I do next? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. — Marly
Troubleshooting: Hello Marly. First, the phone boots up beyond the Samsung logo and second, you already wiped the cache partition. There’s one thing I want you to try before proceeding to a more general troubleshooting procedure–safe mode.
  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When ‘Samsung Galaxy S5’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
If the phone boots up in safe mode after the update, all pre-installed apps will be optimized and that might fix the issue. If not, then proceed with full hard reset. I just want to warn you, though, that all your apps, personal information and other data will be deleted.
Full Master Reset
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
